How we source

Introduction Source tier B — verbatim reporting or hands-on testing: B

Along with Rogue, the least changed class. The interesting work is at the edges: Lone Wolf is a genuine playstyle that did not exist, and Survival has been pushed toward melee rather than left as a trap-and-utility tree. Intimidation grants +100% crit on the pet's stunning attack.

Playable by: 🆕 Human, Dwarf, Night Elf, Orc, Tauren, Troll, both Skyborne.

Best Specialization for Leveling a Hunter Source tier B — verbatim reporting or hands-on testing: B

Beast Mastery to Bestial Wrath, then Marksmanship, 36/15/0 (BM/MM/Survival) at 60

Icy Veins' Marksmanship guide says the deep-MM level-30 build is 'not a good general play build' and points general/world play to the BM build (Deadly Aspects, Pathfinding). It also advises against Lone Wolf at low level outside dungeon AoE. Warcraft Tavern calls BM 'a natural choice for open-world leveling'. BM keeps a strong pet tanking, which matches the KB's 'lowest death rate' note.

Sources: Level 30 BM build in pick order (hunter-talent-calculator#tc-000004455167777a7999c): Deadly Aspects 5, Pathfinding 2, Improved Revive Pet 2, Endurance Training 1, Bestial Swiftness 1, Unleashed Fury 4, Summon Hawk, Unleashed Fury 5/5, Ferocity 3, Intimidation. Used verbatim for 10-30. Legacy extras: Ferocity 5/5, Bestial Discipline 2, Frenzy 1. Says to respec for Bestial Wrath at 31 points. (2026-10-05); MM level-30 build is dungeon/AoE-oriented. Recommends BM for general play. Lone Wolf not advised at low level. (2026-10-05); Level 30 BM (talent-calc/hunter/v25020121503101_t0_l30/0ACFeHmgkkkp): Deadly Aspects 5, Focused Fire 2, Pathfinding 1, Improved Revive Pet 2, Bestial Swiftness, Unleashed Fury 5, Summon Hawk, Ferocity 3, Intimidation. Talented extras: Lethal Attacks 5 (MM). WARNING on page: 'Pet damage increasing talents are currently bugged'; utility talents may be better for now. (2026-10-07).

What is client-checked and what is not

Tree layout and talent text come from Wowhead's datamined Forever dataset (dv=30), pulled 18 October 2026, carrying the 15 October beta build. Names and max ranks were checked against the live client on 25 September; talents changed since then say so in their tooltip. Values can still move between beta builds — where this page and your client disagree, believe the client. Every talent with per-rank text: Hunter Talent Trees.

Best Races for Hunter Source tier D — our analysis: D

The racial effects come from Blizzard’s 15 October notes and client data. The ordering is ours — no credible outlet has published Forever race rankings. Every racial in full →

● Alliance

RankRaceRacial that earns itWhy
BestHumanRuthless — +2% crit, no weapon typeSince 15 October it needs no weapon, so it counts for ranged attacks.
SecondSkyborneWind Blessed — +3% hasteFaster Auto Shot, always on. Needs the Heroic Pack or higher and starts on Zephras Isle, away from a partner for about the first 12 levels.
ThirdDwarfBig Game Hunter — +5% damage against BeastsA levelling racial: much of the early killing is Beasts. Night Elf is fourth.

● Horde

RankRaceRacial that earns itWhy
BestOrcSavage — +1% crit; Blood Fury — +10% Attack PowerBoth work at range; Hardiness helps in PvP.
SecondSkyborneWind Blessed — +3% hasteFaster Auto Shot. Needs the Heroic Pack or higher and starts on Zephras Isle, away from a partner for about the first 12 levels.
ThirdTrollBeast Slaying — +5% damage against BeastsLevels about as fast as Orc, and Berserking speeds up shots.

Since 15 October pets inherit the higher of the Hunter's melee or ranged crit. Whether a racial crit reaches the pet that way is untested.

What these rankings rest on

These rankings use the 15 October build's racials. Since that build no racial needs a weapon type, so Human and Orc crit counts for casters and Hunters too, and Skyborne's +3% haste is the strongest always-on racial for casters (for melee, Human's +2% crit edges it). A later beta build probably existed and was never documented; check the racials again at launch.

New Spells, Reworks & Playstyle Source tier A — official Blizzard or live client data: A

New: Sniper Shot, Strider Kick, Summon Hawk, and a new pet family, the Fox

🔴 Lone Wolf (Marksmanship, 11 points) grants +20% damage with no active pet — a petless Hunter, which has never existed in a Classic-lineage game. Aimed Shot is baseline at 20 and shares a cooldown with Multi-Shot; traps are usable in combat (30 sec cooldown); Tame Beast is limited to beasts no higher than your level. Survival gains real melee talents around Mongoose Bite; Lacerating Strikes makes Mongoose Bite bleed for 40% of its damage over 21 sec. Since 15 October Trueshot Aura reaches the whole raid, Auto Shot needs 0.5 sec standing still, you can have one Fire and one Ice trap out at once, and pets inherit the higher of your melee or ranged crit.

From Blizzard's class deep dives (30 September, 7 October and the Paladin one on 15 October) and the beta development notes of 24 September and 1, 8 and 15 October, as recorded in our knowledge base on 23 October. The 15 October build is the last one with notes.

Levels 20 to 30 Source tier A — official Blizzard or live client data: A

The beta was capped at level 30 from 1 October until it closed, so this is the stretch it tested. Talent points are level − 9: the 16-point talents are bought at level 25, and a 21-point talent at exactly 30 if every point is in one tree.

Pet levelling, Lone Wolf at 11 points and Aimed Shot at 20 are all in reach. The 16-point talents (Summon Hawk, Trueshot Aura, Counterattack) open at 25; Intimidation, Scatter Shot and Strider Kick need all 21 points in one tree at 30. The capstones are not reachable.
