Introduction Source tier B — verbatim reporting or hands-on testing: B
Assassination is the story. Mutilate plus Venom plus the poison talents turn a tree that was unplayable in Classic into a real spec. Combat keeps Adrenaline Rush and Blade Flurry largely intact. Subtlety's Thousand Cuts makes Rupture ticks reduce the next Hemorrhage or Backstab cost by 3, stacking 5 times.
Playable by: Human, Dwarf, Night Elf, Gnome, Orc, Undead, Troll, both Skyborne.
Best Specialization for Leveling a Rogue Source tier B — verbatim reporting or hands-on testing: B
Combat (swords/axes/maces, Blade Flurry), Assassination 18 for crit
Both Forever guides make Combat the levelling Rogue: Sinister Strike/Eviscerate cost cuts, Riposte, Flawless Execution, Dual Wield Specialization and Blade Flurry by 30. After 30, Hack and Slash (replaces weapon specs), Aggression and Adrenaline Rush at 40; then the classic Malice/Ruthlessness/Murder/Relentless Strikes/Lethality Assassination top-up.

Tree layout and talent text come from Wowhead's datamined Forever dataset (dv=30),
pulled 18 October 2026, carrying the 15 October beta build. Names and max ranks were checked against the live client on
25 September; talents changed since then say so in their tooltip. Values can still move between beta builds —
where this page and your client disagree, believe the client. Every talent with per-rank text:

Best Races for Rogue Source tier D — our analysis: D
The racial effects come from Blizzard’s 15 October notes and client data. The ordering is ours — no credible outlet has published Forever race rankings. Every racial in full →
● Alliance
| Rank | Race | Racial that earns it | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Best | Human | Ruthless — +2% crit, any weapon | Since 15 October it works with daggers too. |
| Second | Skyborne | Wind Blessed — +3% haste | More swings, always on. Needs the Heroic Pack or higher and starts on Zephras Isle, away from a partner for about the first 12 levels. |
| Third | Night Elf | Shadowmeld; Elune's Light — +10% crit, 15 sec | Shadowmeld works in combat, Night Elf Rogues are detected in Stealth as if a level higher (tooltip), and Elune's Light is a burst. Gnome is fourth. |
● Horde
| Rank | Race | Racial that earns it | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Best | Orc | Savage — +1% crit; Blood Fury — +10% Attack Power | The best Horde damage pair; Hardiness for PvP. |
| Second | Skyborne | Wind Blessed — +3% haste | Needs the Heroic Pack or higher and starts on Zephras Isle, away from a partner for about the first 12 levels. |
| Third | Undead | Cannibalize; Will of the Forsaken | Cannibalize between pulls while levelling, Will of the Forsaken in PvP. |
These rankings use the 15 October build's racials. Since that build no racial needs a weapon type, so Human and Orc crit counts for casters and Hunters too, and Skyborne's +3% haste is the strongest always-on racial for casters (for melee, Human's +2% crit edges it). A later beta build probably existed and was never documented; check the racials again at launch.
New Spells, Reworks & Playstyle Source tier A — official Blizzard or live client data: A
New: Mutilate, Venom, Cutthroat, Quietus, Thousand Cuts
Hack and Slash condenses the old weapon-specialisation talents into one, and one-handed axes are now usable. Mutilate (21 points): both weapons, +20% against Poisoned targets, 2 combo points. Venom (capstone): Poison damage +30%, application chance +10%. Cold Blood moved to the 16-point row, beside Combat's Flawless Execution (−10 Energy on Eviscerate) and Subtlety's Premeditation (+2 combo points, 20 sec). Poisons carry more charges and stack with sharpening stones. Hemorrhage now grants +15% Rupture damage rather than a flat physical-damage-taken debuff. The 15 October build changed no Rogue talents, only fixes (Cold Blood is now consumed by a Mutilate crit).
From Blizzard's class deep dives (30 September, 7 October and the Paladin one on 15 October) and the beta development notes of 24 September and 1, 8 and 15 October, as recorded in our knowledge base on 23 October. The 15 October build is the last one with notes.

| Subtlety | Thousand Cuts | 31-point capstone | 40 | When your Rupture ability deals periodic damage, the Energy cost of your next Hemorrhage or Backstab ability within 10 sec is reduced by 3, stacking up to 5 times. |
Levels 20 to 30 Source tier A — official Blizzard or live client data: A
The beta was capped at level 30 from 1 October until it closed, so this is the stretch it tested. Talent points are level − 9: the 16-point talents are bought at level 25, and a 21-point talent at exactly 30 if every point is in one tree.
Poisons, Lockpicking and the stealth-opener game all work from the low teens. Cold Blood, Flawless Execution and Premeditation open at 25; Mutilate needs all 21 points in Assassination, which is exactly level 30.
