How we source

Introduction Source tier B — verbatim reporting or hands-on testing: B

Frost for levelling (Tier D) — not for damage but because the mob spends the fight frozen. Fire keeps the highest single-target ceiling. Arcane changed most and is plausibly the new raid spec: Arcane Blast ramps your Spell Damage, Missile Barrage procs free Missiles and Arcane Wrath scales with your mana pool. Orc Mage exists because Blood Fury grants Spell Power; the 15 October build lengthened its cooldown to 3 minutes and left Troll Berserking alone. Spell ranks were rebalanced on 8 October: train every rank of Frostbolt, Fireball and Arcane Missiles.

Playable by: Human, Gnome, 🆕 Orc, Undead, Troll, High Order Skyborne.

Mage alone gets a new secondary skill

Comprehension lets Mages decipher scrolls into weapon imbues and weapon-upgrade items. It is the only new secondary skill in Forever, and Blizzard's Mage deep dive (7 October) announced it officially — full detail below.

Best Specialization for Leveling a Mage Source tier B — verbatim reporting or hands-on testing: B

Frost (deep Frost, 51 points)

Frostbite roots feed Ice Lance and Shatter, which is survival and damage in a no-tank solo or duo. After 30: Cold Snap/Ice Block/Ice Barrier for safety, Improved Blizzard and Frost Channeling for cheaper AoE grinding, then Improved Cone of Cold, hit and utility, and Winter's Chill last (since 15 October its stacks set up your next Cone of Cold on one target rather than adding crit).

What is client-checked and what is not

Tree layout and talent text come from Wowhead's datamined Forever dataset (dv=30), pulled 18 October 2026, carrying the 15 October beta build. Names and max ranks were checked against the live client on 25 September; talents changed since then say so in their tooltip. Values can still move between beta builds — where this page and your client disagree, believe the client. Every talent with per-rank text: Mage Talent Trees.

Best Races for Mage Source tier D — our analysis: D

The racial effects come from Blizzard’s 15 October notes and client data. The ordering is ours — no credible outlet has published Forever race rankings. Every racial in full →

● Alliance

RankRaceRacial that earns itWhy
BestSkyborneWind Blessed — +3% hasteCasting is haste-bound, so this comes first. Needs the Heroic Pack or higher and starts on Zephras Isle, away from a partner for about the first 12 levels.
SecondHumanRuthless — +2% crit, no weapon neededSpell crit feeds Heating Up and Ignite; it now beats Gnome's 8-second Eureka on damage.
ThirdGnomeExpansive Mind — +5% Mana; Eureka!Keeps the mana edge for long fights.

● Horde

RankRaceRacial that earns itWhy
BestTrollBerserking — +10% casting speed, 10 secBerserking and Blood Fury are both on 3-minute cooldowns now; for a caster whose damage is cast-time bound, +10% casting speed edges +10% Spell Power.
SecondOrcBlood Fury — +10% Spell Power; Savage — +1% critSavage now counts for casters.
ThirdUndeadWill of the Forsaken; CannibalizeThe PvP and sustain pick.
What these rankings rest on

These rankings use the 15 October build's racials. Since that build no racial needs a weapon type, so Human and Orc crit counts for casters and Hunters too, and Skyborne's +3% haste is the strongest always-on racial for casters (for melee, Human's +2% crit edges it). A later beta build probably existed and was never documented; check the racials again at launch.

New Spells, Reworks & Playstyle Source tier A — official Blizzard or live client data: A

New: Ice Lance, Arcane Blast, Frostfire Bolt (baseline at 40), Fingers of Frost, Heating Up (Fire's 16-point talent, called Hot Streak until 1 October), Missile Barrage, Arcane Wrath (Arcane's 16-point talent since 15 October), Frost Blast (baseline at 24, 15 October)

🔴 Ice Lance sits at 11 points and deals +200% damage to Frozen targets (+300% before 15 October) — the single biggest change to how Frost feels. Fingers of Frost decouples Shatter from Frost Nova. ⚠️ Winter's Chill no longer adds crit (15 October): its stacks now power up your next Cone of Cold, and it still benefits only the casting Mage. Cone of Cold slows its first 4 targets harder and longer. Frost Blast (24) takes over Rank 1 Frostbolt’s slowing job, at a higher mana cost than that rank. Heating Up: Fireball, Frostfire Bolt, Fire Blast and Scorch crits cut the next Pyroblast's cast time by 25%, three stacks, and since 15 October every Fire Blast adds a stack. Combustion is back to 3 charges; Critical Mass is 5 ranks and Fire Power 3 ranks (per Fire effect on the target, up to 12%); Wake of Fire is Improved Fire Blast again. Cold Snap is the 21-point Frost talent on a 10 min cooldown. Ice Barrier (31 points) now also raises your Frost damage by 3% for a minute, and by 3% more while the shield holds; Elemental Precision is 3 ranks for 3% hit since a hotfix after 17 October. Arcane Blast (15 October) is a 1.5 sec cast that stacks Spell Damage from your Intellect; Missile Barrage moved to row 1 with 2 ranks.

From Blizzard's class deep dives (30 September, 7 October and the Paladin one on 15 October) and the beta development notes of 24 September and 1, 8 and 15 October, as recorded in our knowledge base on 23 October. The 15 October build is the last one with notes.

Key Talents & Leveling Milestones

The levels where this build changes how the Mage plays:

LevelWhat arrives
20Ice Lance (11-pt)
24Frost Blast (trained spell, not a talent)
30Fingers of Frost 1/2 - the beta's cap (Ice Block is the KB alternative)
33Cold Snap
36Improved Blizzard 3/3 - AoE grinding
40Ice Barrier (31-pt)
46Elemental Precision 3/3 - 3% spell hit
6051 Frost - Winter's Chill 5/5 last

Every milestone talent in the three trees, with the earliest level you can take it (points = level − 9, all in that tree):

TreeTalentMilestoneEarliest levelRank 1
ArcaneArcane Blast11-point20Blasts the target with energy, dealing 34 to 38 Arcane damage. Each time you cast Arcane Blast, you gain 15% of your Intellect as Spell Damage and the mana cost of Arcane Blast is increased by 175%. Effect stacks up to 4 times and lasts 15 sec from time of initial application.
ArcaneArcane Wrath16-point (new in Forever)25Launches a projectile of pure Arcane energy at the enemy target, causing 122 to 146 Arcane damage. This spell gains additional Spell Damage equal to 5% of your maximum Mana.
ArcanePresence of Mind21-point30When activated, your next Mage spell with a casting time less than 10 sec becomes an instant cast spell.
ArcaneArcane Power31-point capstone40For the next 15 sec, your spells deal 30% more damage while costing 30% more mana to cast.
FirePyroblast11-point20Hurls an immense fiery boulder that causes 101 to 131 Fire damage and an additional 44 Fire damage over 12 sec.
FireHeating Up16-point (new in Forever)25Non-periodic critical strikes with Fireball, Frostfire Bolt, Fire Blast, and Scorch reduce the cast time of your next Pyroblast cast within 20 sec by 25%, stacking up to 3 times. Fire Blast grants an additional stack every time it deals damage.
FireBlast Wave21-point30A wave of flame radiates outward from the caster, damaging all enemies caught within the blast for 154 to 184 Fire damage, and Dazing them for 50% reduced movement speed for 6 sec.
FireCombustion31-point capstone40When activated, this spell causes each of your Fire damage spell hits to increase your critical strike chance with Fire damage spells by 10%. This effect lasts until you have caused 3 non-periodic critical strikes with Fire spells.
FrostIce Lance11-point20Deals 28 to 32 Frost damage to an enemy target. Deals 200% increased damage to Frozen targets.
FrostIce Block16-point (new in Forever)25You become encased in a block of ice, protecting you from all physical attacks and spells for 10 sec, but during that time you cannot attack, move, or cast spells.
FrostCold Snap21-point30Finishes the remaining cooldown on all your other Frost spells.
FrostIce Barrier31-point capstone40Shield yourself, absorbing damage based on your spell power and increasing your Frost damage by 3% for 1 min. While shielded, your Frost damage is increased by an additional 3% and you do not lose casting time when you take damage.

Comprehension — the Mage-only tradeskill Source tier A — official Blizzard or live client data: A

Blizzard's Mage deep dive (7 October) officially announced Comprehension: a Mage-only minor tradeskill for deciphering scrolls dropped by creatures, used through a new ability, Comprehend Scroll (General tab of the spellbook). It is the only new secondary skill in Forever; every other secondary is a Classic carry-over. Since the 1 October build a scroll can no longer be deciphered while moving. Blizzard has also mentioned a separate Mage feature called Research; what it does is not yet known.

Source tier B — verbatim reporting or hands-on testing: B The item and spell data fills in the rest. Comprehension is secondary skill 3012. The untranslated scrolls are white, Mage-only items whose names are old Blizzard cheat codes — KWYJIBO, CWAL, LOWER PING WHOMEVER, CHAP BALK WELLES, and on the second tier VOCE WELL, OMIT KESA, STHENIC LUNATE. Tier one (item level 10) needs Comprehension (1); tier two (item level 20) needs (15). It can fail — a spell called Comprehension Failure exists.

What comes out: 🔴 Mage-only temporary staff and sword imbues, which no caster has had in a Classic-lineage game, at required levels 5, 16, 25 and 46 — from Imbue Lesser Flame (+4 Fire damage for an hour) up to Imbue Greater Frost — plus Scroll of Minor Evocation (mana, 8 min cooldown) and two bind-on-pickup scrolls that upgrade a named weapon: Scroll of the Saber on Blade of Silverlaine and Scroll of Wit on Witchblade. To help: Scroll of Comprehension gives +15 skill for an hour, and Conjure Comprehension Charms is a level-25 Mage spell (6 sec cast, 3 hr 33 min cooldown) that makes five bind-on-pickup Comprehension Charms.

Still untested in game

Blizzard has confirmed the skill and the ability; the detail above is item and spell data. Where each scroll drops, how the skill levels, the failure chance, whether a failure destroys the scroll, and whether outputs are fixed or random are all unknown. On 19 September the beta auction house listed 5,578 tier-one scrolls at 1 silver each, because nobody knew what they were for — that scan is now old.

Levels 20 to 30 Source tier A — official Blizzard or live client data: A

The beta was capped at level 30 from 1 October until it closed, so this is the stretch it tested. Talent points are level − 9: the 16-point talents are bought at level 25, and a 21-point talent at exactly 30 if every point is in one tree.

🔴 Ice Lance is reachable at 20 — 11 points. Blink, Polymorph, Blizzard, Mana Shield and Teleport are all in by 20. Ice Block (moved to the 16-point row) opens at 25; Cold Snap needs all 21 points in Frost at 30. Portals are 40+ and were out of reach in the beta.
