Day One for a Duo
Everything two players should settle before launch day, an hour-by-hour plan for the day itself, and the answer to the question nobody thinks about until they are stuck: you have no mount, no summon and no portal — how do you actually get to each other?

The companion decision page: which two classes go together, which race goes with each, how to split four profession slots, and the fastest route when the two of you start apart.
The one decision that outranks all the others Source tier D — our analysis: D
Everything else on this page is optimisation. This is the one that decides whether your first two evenings are fun or are spent running along a road. Two characters who share a starting zone are levelling together from the first quest. Two who start on different continents cannot realistically meet until their twenties — and in a game with no mount until 40, no meeting stone you can use, and flight paths you have to walk to first, “we'll just meet up” is an hour each way.
The best pairs share a literal starting cave. On the Horde that is Orc and Troll, who both begin in the Valley of Trials — and Forever now allows Orc Mage and Troll Warlock, so that one starting zone covers almost every class combination worth running. On the Alliance it is Dwarf and Gnome, who share Coldridge Valley, with Dwarf Shaman new this expansion — or two Humans in Northshire: since the 15 October racials Human is our top Alliance pick for most classes, and the new Human Hunter puts a Hunter and a Warlock in the same zone. Race per pairing →
Where every race starts, and where they converge Source tier B — verbatim reporting or hands-on testing: B
Geography is unchanged from Classic; Forever adds Zephras Isle as the Skyborne starting experience. The column that matters is the last one.
Horde
| Race | Starting zone | Continent | First hub | Meets the others… |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Orc · Troll | Valley of Trials, Durotar | Kalimdor | Razor Hill | Same cave. Immediately. |
| Tauren | Red Cloud Mesa, Mulgore | Kalimdor | Bloodhoof Village | The Barrens, ~level 11–12 |
| Undead | Deathknell, Tirisfal Glades | Eastern Kingdoms | Brill | Not until the Orgrimmar zeppelin, ~20 |
| Skyborne (Windshaper) | Zephras Isle | Its own island | — | After the isle releases you, ~12 |
Alliance
| Race | Starting zone | Continent | First hub | Meets the others… |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dwarf · Gnome | Coldridge Valley, Dun Morogh | Eastern Kingdoms | Kharanos | Same valley. Immediately. |
| Human | Northshire, Elwynn Forest | Eastern Kingdoms | Goldshire | Ironforge tram or the road, ~10–12 |
| Night Elf | Shadowglen, Teldrassil | Kalimdor | Dolanaar | Two boats. ~20. |
| Skyborne (High Order) | Zephras Isle | Its own island | — | After the isle releases you, ~12 |
The new race is the one everybody wants to play on day one, and it starts on an island of its own. Two Skyborne together is fine. One Skyborne and one anything-else is the worst possible pairing for a duo, because you are separated for the entire first stretch of the game and the isle is the part you would most want to see together. Skyborne also needs the Heroic Pack at minimum, so it is a purchase decision as well as a levelling one.
Settle these before 4 November Source tier A — official Blizzard or live client data: A
Blizzard: “You can create and customize up to three characters during this period.” It opens at 1:00 p.m. PDT on 27 October, the three are a total across all rulesets, and it is first come, first served (how to reserve). Reservation is included with any upgrade purchase, so it needs one. Names are two-part and the full name must be unique per region — surnames can be shared, so a duo can carry one family name. Blizzard publishes no length limit per field. Use all three slots: a name you do not take is a name someone else does.
The pre-launch checklist
| Decide | Why it has to be now |
|---|---|
| Faction, then starting zone, then class | In that order. Class is the decision people agonise over and it is the least constrained — nearly every class is available from a shared starting zone. Starting zone is the one you cannot change later. |
| Who tanks or heals | Not for the levelling — for the dungeon groups. There is no dungeon finder, so a duo that brings its own tank or healer fills a group in minutes; one that brings two DPS waits. The pairing table → |
| Who takes which professions | Because you should not overlap. The four-slot split → And take all three secondaries on both characters. |
| Which camp object each of you brings | A campfire takes one object per player. Two players, two buffs — Fishing's Fish Bowl (+8% all stats) and Skinning's Camp Chair (+2% crit), both at skill 20. The maths → |
| Names, reserved in the window | 27 Oct – 3 Nov, three characters each. |
| Addons installed and tested before the day | Launch day is not the day to discover an addon is broken. |
Launch day, hour by hour Source tier D — our analysis: D
Forever goes live 4 November 2026 at 3:00 p.m. PST — 6:00 p.m. Eastern, 11:00 p.m. UK. Plan around the queue, because there will be one.
| When | Do |
|---|---|
| The night before | Client fully patched and launched once. Addons in and loaded. Agree the plan in writing so nobody is improvising at 3:01. |
| 2:30 p.m. | Both of you sitting at the login screen. Voice chat already working. |
| 3:00 p.m. | In. Create your characters in the same order you agreed and confirm you are in the same starting zone before either of you accepts a quest. |
| First 30 minutes | Group up immediately and stay grouped. Quest credit for kills is shared in a party and mob tagging on a launch day is brutal — ungrouped, you will fight each other for every spawn. |
| Level 3–4 | 🔴 Take the free gathering-profession quest. It rewards a manual — Mining, Skinning or Herbalism — that teaches the profession outright. It only works while you have a free primary slot, so take it before visiting a trainer. |
| First evening | Clear the starting zone together. Do not split up to “go faster” — on a launch night the bottleneck is spawns, not your damage. |
| Level 5–10 | Train the three secondaries at the first town: Cooking, First Aid, Fishing. Set your hearthstone at the same inn. |
| Level 10–12 | Move to the first real hub together. Start the Fishing-to-20 and Skinning-to-20 push so the campfire buffs come online early. |
| Level 13–20 | First dungeons. Pick up every dungeon quest before the first run — they still pay bonus experience, though Blizzard halved that bonus on 1 October and now aims for dungeon XP per hour to roughly match questing. A run is a fair alternative to questing, not a jackpot. |
Getting to each other — the honest version Source tier C — provisional or placeholder data: C
- 🔴 No mount until 40, and Forever moved the cost into riding training: Apprentice Riding is 100g at 40 Source tier B — verbatim reporting or hands-on testing: B. Whether the training also hands you a mount is unconfirmed.
- 🔴 A Warlock cannot summon in a duo. Ritual of Summoning needs three players in Classic — the summoner plus two. Two people cannot use it on each other. ⚠️ Forever has not announced a change, so assume the Classic rule until you test it.
- A Mage's Teleport is self-only. The group Portal spells arrive much later than the personal teleports. ⚠️ Classic baseline — verify the exact levels on your own trainer.
- Flight paths must be walked to first. You cannot fly to somewhere you have never been.
- The hearthstone, on roughly an hour's cooldown. Set both of yours at the same inn — that is your shared respawn point and it is worth more than it sounds.
- Zeppelins and boats, free and on a timer. Horde: Orgrimmar↔Undercity, Orgrimmar↔Grom'gol. Alliance: Menethil↔Auberdine, Auberdine↔Rut'theran, and the Ironforge↔Stormwind tram.
- Corpse running, which is genuinely the fastest way to cross a dangerous zone when you have nothing to lose. Not a joke.
- Each other. Two players can clear a road that one player cannot.
If you are already split up
| Situation | Do this |
|---|---|
| Same continent, different zone | Both of you walk, meeting in the middle, picking up flight points on the way. Do not have one person do all the walking — you halve the wall-clock time and you both bank the flight paths. |
| Different continents | Whoever is behind in levels travels, and does it as a one-way move: hearthstone set at the destination, professions and bank emptied first. Treat it as emigration, not a visit. |
| One of you is on Zephras Isle | Finish the isle. Do not try to leave early — it is a designed starting experience and the exit is part of it. |
| Levels have drifted more than ~4 apart | 🔴 Fix this before it compounds. Since 8 October kill XP follows the Classic Era per-member rule rather than being cut by the highest-level player, but a vastly higher member still zeroes it for everyone, and the gap makes every quest wrong for one of you. The one who is ahead should level a bank alt, work a profession, or farm materials for both — all of which are useful and none of which widen the gap. |
The route to 60 Source tier C — provisional or placeholder data: C
⚠️ Zone level bands are the Classic 1.12 layout, which Forever did not rebuild. Dungeon ranges are Blizzard's own published table. The new zones are marked. The principle underneath: quest density beats mob density, and one run with a dungeon's quests in hand beats several clears without them.
| Level | Horde | Alliance | Dungeon to do once |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1–10 | Starting zone → Razor Hill / Bloodhoof | Starting zone → Kharanos / Goldshire | — |
| 10–20 | The Barrens (Crossroads) — the densest quest hub in the game | Loch Modan · Westfall · Darkshore | Hall of Thanes 13–18 · Ruins of Lordaeron 15–20 |
| 20–30 | Ashenvale · Stonetalon · Thousand Needles | Wetlands · Duskwood · Hillsbrad | Excavation Site: Wetlands 26–31 · City of Dalaran 28–33 |
| 30–40 | Arathi · Desolace · Dustwallow · Stranglethorn · Badlands — and 🆕 Riverglades opens in the mid-30s | The Drowned City 35–40 | |
| 40–50 | 🆕 Riverglades through the mid-40s · Tanaris · Feralas · Hinterlands · Un'Goro | Krol'dok Stronghold 40–45 · Alcaz Prison 48–53 | |
| 50–60 | Felwood · Winterspring · Burning Steppes · Western then Eastern Plaguelands · Silithus | Blackmaw Hold 55–60 · Shaper's Terrace 58–60 | |
| 60 | 🆕 Mount Hyjal — both new raids, from 9 December · 🆕 Shen'dralas, between Mulgore and Desolace (endgame; Blizzard gives no level range) | — | |
It is the one genuinely new levelling zone in the mainline game, Blizzard put 150+ new quests in it, and quest density is what levelling speed is actually made of. Blizzard describes it only as “mid-30s to mid-40s” and gives no numeric range. A brand-new zone with that many quests will also be full of people on the way up, which is the other thing a duo wants.
1. Stay grouped, always. Quest credit is shared and mob tagging is not. Ungrouped on a busy zone you compete with your own friend.
2. Keep food up. Crafted food gives a stat buff and about +5% experience from kills for 15 minutes, for ten seconds seated. It is the cheapest levelling buff in the game and it is the one everyone forgets.
3. Sit at the fire once an hour. One minute seated gives you both roughly an hour of camp buffs, and crafting at the fire counts as sitting. Why this is the best duo mechanic in the game →
