Three casters, three routes to 30 and beyond

Levelling a Caster

Mage and Warlock are the two fastest solo levellers among the casters, and they get there by opposite routes. Mage wins by never being hit. Warlock wins by never stopping. Priest is slower and safer, and the natural partner for a Warrior. This is the talent path to level 30 (the beta's level cap from 1 October), the loop and the gear priority for each, with what Forever changed, on the 15 October talent trees.

How we source

Levelling as a pair →

All nine classes ranked for solo speed, the best duo pairings, and how October's dungeon-experience retune (dungeon XP per hour now roughly equal to questing) changes which pair you want.

Levelling every profession →

All twelve from 1 to 300, and where the auction house saves you hours — including the three professions where it cannot help at all.

Why these two Source tier B — verbatim reporting or hands-on testing: B

Levelling speed in a Classic-lineage game is not decided by damage. It is decided by downtime — the thirty seconds you spend sitting and drinking every two to four pulls, all the way to 60. A class that kills 15% slower but never sits will out-level a class that bursts hard and then eats.

Mage — avoidance

Frostbolt chills, Frost Nova roots, Blink escapes. The mob spends most of the fight not hitting you, so you take almost no damage and barely drink. Conjure Water means you never buy or carry drink either.

Warlock — attrition

The Voidwalker holds the mob, Life Tap turns health into mana, Drain Life turns damage into health. The loop closes on itself — a Warlock at full health with a healthy pet has effectively no downtime at all.

For contrast: Warrior is the consensus worst solo leveller in vanilla, and the gap to Mage is roughly one to two days of /played over 1–60.

Mage Source tier A — official Blizzard or live client data: A

Spec: Frost, and it is not close

Not for damage — Fire out-damages Frost on a dummy. Frost wins because the mob spends the fight frozen, slowed or dead, which means near-zero damage taken, which means near-zero drinking. In Forever, Ice Lance and Fingers of Frost make this loop strictly better than it has ever been.

The talent path

LevelsPointsTalentWhy
10–145Improved Frostbolt 5/5−0.5s off a 3s cast — ~17% more throughput on every cast, and less standing still
15–173Frostbite 3/3Chill effects can root. A root counts as Frozen — the state Ice Lance and Shatter key off
18–192Ice Shards 2/5Opens row 3 (10 Frost points)
201🔴 Ice Lance 1/1 (11-point talent)+200% damage against Frozen targets (15 October; was +300%). Instant, low base damage
21–233Ice Shards 5/5Frost crit damage +100%
24–263Piercing Ice 3/3+6% Frost damage
27–293Shatter 3/3+50% crit against Frozen targets; no longer requires Improved Frost Nova
301Fingers of Frost 1/2 or Ice BlockFingers of Frost (row 5, needs Ice Lance): chill effects grant charges, each making one cast treat the target as Frozen. Take Ice Block (now the 16-point talent) first if deaths are the problem

Frostbite into Ice Lance is the build. Frostbolt chills → Frostbite procs a root → Ice Lance lands with its +200% bonus. That combination did not exist in Classic and it is the single biggest change to how Frost feels; the 15 October cut from +300% leaves the order unchanged. Do not spread into Arcane or Fire before Ice Lance.

Train every Frostbolt rank. The 8 October build rebalanced ranks 1–5 of Frostbolt, Fireball and Arcane Missiles so each new rank is an upgrade, and ranks vastly below your level now do less and proc less (a rank-1 Frostbolt at 60 has a 0% Frostbite chance). Train Frost Blast at 24: a new 1.5s spell with a 40% slow that uses every Frostbolt talent, added on 15 October to replace the old rank-1 Frostbolt slow. Since the same build wands need you to stand still for 0.5s before shooting. Source tier A — official Blizzard or live client data: A The talent order above is ours Source tier D — our analysis: D; Elemental Precision (now +hit with Fire and Frost) is a 60 talent.

The loop

Frostbolt at max range → Frostbolt → Frost Nova when it closes → Blink backwards → two more Frostbolts → dead. Weave Ice Lance whenever the target is Frozen. You should finish most fights at or near full health.

AoE grinding — the superpower and the skill ceiling

From the mid-30s you can pull eight to fifteen mobs, kite them in a circle with Frost Nova and Blizzard, and kill the pack. Done well it is the fastest experience and gold in the game. Done badly it is instant death, and it demands reading mob paths, respawn timers, caster positions and your own mana to the percentage point.

Forever dulled the AoE safety nets — partly on purpose

Improved Flamestrike now grants crit rather than Classic's stun chance, and Blast Wave dazes rather than stuns Source tier B: B. Blizzard's Mage deep dive then cut AoE farming deliberately: Improved Blizzard's slow now tops out at 40% (Classic 65%) and Cone of Cold's duration was reduced Source tier A: A. The 15 October build gave a little back: Cone of Cold now slows its first four targets an extra 10% for 3s longer, which helps small pulls more than big ones. Expect AoE grinding to be noticeably less forgiving than Classic guides describe.

Two things Mages get that no one else does: free water and food forever, and portals — which in a world with no LFG tool, no flying and 15-minute boat rides are real social currency. The Mage who opens portals gets known, gets tips and gets invited.

Warlock Source tier A — official Blizzard or live client data: A

Warlock is the most rebuilt class in Forever

Blizzard's Warlock deep dive (7 October): Curse of Agony and Curse of Doom are now Banes (one Bane per Warlock per target), Curse of Shadows is gone, Life Tap scales with Spirit, and Firestone/Spellstone are weapon imbues that stack with oils. Classic Warlock build advice transfers worse here than for any other class, so treat old guides with suspicion. Source tier A — official Blizzard or live client data: A

The talent path

LevelsPointsTalentWhy
10–145Improved Corruption 5/5Forever version: −2s cast and +10% damage. Instant Corruption means you DoT while moving
15–162Soul Harvest 2/2A Drain Soul killing blow grants 10s of doubled mana regeneration that keeps running while you cast. Renamed from Soul Harvesting, and only actually worked from 1 October
17–193Improved Drains 3/3+20% Drain Life / Drain Soul — Drain Life is your heal. Opens row 3
20–212Improved Life Tap 2/2+20% mana per tap — Life Tap is the mana engine
22–232🔴 Grim Reach 2/2 New+20% Affliction range: open from further out and keep Drain Life up while the Voidwalker holds the mob. Replaced Malediction on 15 October
241Suppression 1/5+1% hit, −4% threat; opens row 4
25–262Nightfall 2/2Instant Shadow Bolt procs (Shadow Trance)
27–304Malevolence 4/5Shadow spell crit chance (up to 5% at 5/5) — not a “DoTs can crit” talent

Why this order: the sustain talents (Soul Harvest, Improved Drains) come first, at the levels where the mana pool is smallest and downtime hurts most; Grim Reach is quality of life rather than damage, so it waits. If you prefer damage to range, take Improved Bane of Agony 2/2 in place of Grim Reach.

The tanky alternative, if dying is the problem rather than kill speed: keep Improved Corruption 5/5, then put the next five into Demonology's Demonic Embrace (+15% Stamina) and follow with Demonic Energies 2/2 for a self-healing Voidwalker. For a Warlock, Stamina is mana, because Life Tap converts one into the other.

Skip Destruction at this level. Bane is the Classic −0.5s on Shadow Bolt and Immolate (an earlier reading that it had been doubled was wrong). Shadow Bolt spam burns mana you cannot replace yet, and Ruin — the payoff — sits at row 3 needing 10 Destruction points, which costs you Improved Corruption entirely.

What Forever added to the attrition loop

Blizzard appears to have deliberately reinforced exactly the thing that makes Warlock level well. All four are downtime talents:

TalentEffect
Demonic Energies NewYour pet heals for 15% of all spell damage you deal, and Life Tap gives your demon 100% of the mana you gain
Improved Health Funnel+40% transferred, −30% health cost, −100% threat, usable at any pet health
Fel Vitality+15% pet health and mana and +15% your own maximum mana — the self-mana half is new
Soul Harvest NewA Drain Soul killing blow grants 10s of 50/100% mana regeneration while casting (renamed from Soul Harvesting; the regeneration only started working on 1 October)

The loop

Voidwalker in → Corruption → Immolate → Curse of Agony (now a Bane) → Shadow Bolt filler → Drain Life if hurt → Life Tap when low on mana. You should almost never need to sit.

Against it: slower to kill than a Mage, no real AoE grinding until much later, and Soul Shards eat bag space — get a Soul Bag early. Troll Warlock is one of the six new race/class combos, and Troll Berserking in Forever is +10% casting and attack speed for 10 seconds, which makes it a genuine pick rather than a flavour one. The 15 October racial pass left Berserking unchanged and raised Troll Regeneration to 20%; Orc Blood Fury, which also adds Spell Power, moved to a 3-minute cooldown Source tier A — official Blizzard or live client data: A. Since the same build wands need you to stand still for 0.5s before shooting.

Priest Source tier A — official Blizzard or live client data: A

Spec: Shadow, with Wand Specialization early

Priest is the slowest of the three casters solo and the safest — and the natural partner for a Warrior, because a Priest erases the Warrior's worst problem, downtime and death. Every Priest now gets Fear Ward and Devouring Plague baseline at 20 (Devouring Plague is no longer Undead-only), Divine Spirit baseline at 30 and Shadow Word: Death at 32.

The talent path Source tier D — our analysis: D

LevelsPointsTalentWhy
10–112Wand Specialization 2/2 (Discipline)Forever needs only 2 ranks for the full +25% (Classic took 5). The wand is a large share of your levelling damage, so it comes first
12–165Spirit Tap 5/5Mana back after kills — the levelling engine for a wand-and-DoT Priest. Until Vampiric Embrace, finish mobs yourself
17–182Improved Shadow Word: Pain 2/2+6s Shadow Word: Pain — more damage per mana, fewer refreshes
19–213Improved Mind Blast 3/5Faster Mind Blast, and opens row 3. Moved to row 2 on 15 October
221🔴 Mind Flay (11-point talent)Channel plus a 50% slow — the first real filler nuke. Row 3 needs 10 Shadow points, so the two Discipline points push it from 20 to 22
23–242Improved Mind Flay 2/2Since 15 October each tick deals 10/20% more than the last, so channel it fully (the old range-for-slow trade is gone)
25–262Improved Mind Blast 5/5Mind Blast every 5.5s instead of 8; opens row 4
271Vampiric Embrace (16-point talent)30s duration and, since 15 October, a 30s cooldown (was 1 minute) and it can't be resisted: near-permanent party healing from your Shadow damage. Row 4 needs 15 Shadow points, so 27 is the earliest
28–303Dark Inspiration 3/5 NewNew row-4 talent on 15 October: Mind Blast or a fully channelled Mind Flay gives you and your party +9% Spirit for 10s

If you rarely channel Mind Flay to the end, take Improved Mind Blast 5/5 before Improved Mind Flay. If threat pulls mobs off your partner, Silent Resolve (Discipline row 2, which since 15 October covers all your spells) is the answer after 30.

Train every rank of Smite, Lesser Heal and Heal — the 8 October build rebalanced ranks 1–5 so each one is an upgrade. Wands no longer gain damage from spell damage (24 September), so Wand Specialization multiplies the wand's own damage and the upgrade that matters is the wand itself; since 15 October a wand also needs you to stand still for 0.5s before it shoots. Blizzard also said Power Word: Shield no longer reduces the Rage a Warrior gains from damage taken (the underlying absorb bug was fixed in the 8 October build) — shield your Warrior freely. Source tier A — official Blizzard or live client data: A

Race: every race has two Priest spells — Undead Touch of Weakness and Dark Sacrifice (health into mana over time, scaling with Spirit), Human Divine Grace and Feedback, Dwarf Desperate Prayer and Chastise, Night Elf Starshards and Elune's Grace, Troll Hex of Weakness and Shadowguard, Gnome Confounding Flash and Contingency Plan. Undead's Cannibalize also restores mana, which makes it a drink substitute, and since 15 October Touch of the Grave procs 30% of the time for casters. Priest + Warrior as a pair →

Gear priority Source tier B — verbatim reporting or hands-on testing: B

Spell Power > Stamina > Intellect > Spirit > Crit > Hit — full reasoning and the arithmetic on the Caster Stats page.

Your weapon is now a damage slot — this is new

🔴 Caster weapons grant spell damage and healing in Forever, from around level 10 — except wands, which since 24 September no longer gain damage from spell damage. In Classic a levelling caster's weapon was a pure stat-stick and upgrades felt inert. Check every staff and sword quest reward now; a wand upgrade is a wand-damage upgrade only. Wizard Oils are back to Classic values (Minor/Lesser/Wizard Oil 8/16/24 spell power) — and note you cannot equip a weapon type you have not trained. Two capitals cannot teach Staves at all: Ironforge and Undercity. See Weapon skills.

At the beta cap Source tier A — official Blizzard or live client data: A

The beta cap rose from 20 to 30 on 1 October and stayed there until the beta closed. Talent points are level − 9, so level 30 means 21 talent points: the new 16-point talents are bought at level 25, and a 21-point talent is reachable at exactly 30 if every point is in one tree. The same arithmetic holds at launch.

Mage at 30

Ice Lance — 11 points — arrives at 20; Shatter and Ice Block (the 16-point talent) by 30. Blink, Polymorph, Blizzard, Mana Shield, Fire Ward and Teleport are all in, and Frost Blast arrives at 24. Portals are 40+ and Frostfire Bolt is learned at 40 — neither was reachable in the beta.

Warlock at 30

Improved Corruption, Soul Harvest, Improved Drains, Improved Life Tap, Grim Reach and Nightfall are all in by 30, and the 16-point Curse of Exhaustion / Fel Domination / Conflagrate are bought at 25. See Classes.

The real enemy Source tier C — provisional or placeholder data: C

The following is vanilla 1.12 baseline, not a Forever source. Blizzard's stated pacing — 10–15 seconds per ordinary mob, no flying, no level scaling — implies it broadly holds.

  • Drink downtime defines the experience. Roughly 30 seconds of sitting every two to four pulls, all the way to 60.
  • Cloth squishiness is real. Two mobs at once is a probable death below 40. Three is certain. There is no Retail-style "pull big and burn it down".
  • A corpse run is five to ten minutes in a world with no flying. Dying is the most expensive mistake available to you, which is why Stamina outranks Intellect above.

Everything on this page is in service of one number: time spent not fighting. Pick the talents that reduce it, take the gear that reduces it, and the levels arrive on their own.

Talent names read from the beta client (15 October build); values from Blizzard's class deep dives and beta development notes (24 September; 1, 8 and 15 October); talent orders are our analysis; levelling pacing is vanilla baseline and flagged where it applies. Last updated 23 October 2026.
