Choosing a Class

The short answer: for the fastest solo levelling, play a Hunter, Warlock or Mage. To tank, Warrior is the long-term pick and Paladin the easiest start. To heal, Priest is still the default. These are our picks, reasoned from Blizzard's nine class deep dives and the 15 October beta build, the last one with dev notes; no credible outlet has ranked Forever's classes. Below: the picks by role, the solo ranking, a card for each class, then the talent reference.

No tier lists exist

No credible outlet has published Forever spec rankings; nearly every tier list search returns sits on a gold-selling or boosting site. Every ranking here is our reasoning from confirmed mechanics. Blizzard's aim, in our words: bring anyone, stack nobody. All 27 talent trees are viable in dungeons and raids, none is strong enough to stack, and the specs are explicitly not equal. Source tier A — official Blizzard or live client data: A

Solo levelling speed, all nine Source tier D — our analysis: D

Weighted on time per kill, downtime, death rate and travel. Blizzard's pacing target is 10–15 seconds per ordinary kill, so downtime outweighs damage. Speed from 1 to 60 only: Warrior last here is compatible with Warrior being the best tank at 60.

#ClassWhy
1HunterThe pet tanks, you shoot from 40 yards, tracking finds the quest mob; the lowest death rate. Lone Wolf (petless Marksmanship) is a faster, riskier option.
2WarlockA pet, and Drain Life, Healthstone and Life Tap close the downtime loop; Soulstone makes a death cheap.
3MageFastest cast-to-corpse, free food and water, AoE grinding; Ice Lance at 11 points.
4DruidTravel Form cuts travel before mounts, Cat damage, Bear as a panic button, its own heals; Revive at 12.
5PaladinKills slowly but almost never dies or sits down; Holy Strike at 6, Consecration at 20.
6RogueFast kills, and Stealth skips content; no heal.
7ShamanSelf-heals and Windfury spikes, held back by mana and the totem tax (totems now last 5 minutes on a 1-second global cooldown).
8PriestSafe, slow, wand-heavy; Shadow is the levelling spec.
9WarriorNo heal, the highest gold cost, the most gear-dependent. Victory Rush at 20 helps; the payoff is at 60.

Tanks — which one Source tier D — our analysis: D

Three real options; there are no Shaman tanks at launch Source tier B — verbatim reporting or hands-on testing: B.

TankForAgainst
Protection Warrior Rebuilt as a shield tank: Thunder Clap works in Defensive Stance (6s cooldown), Shield Slam scales with Block Value, Retaliation and Shield Wall sit on separate 15-minute cooldowns, and Vanguard allows Charge in Defensive Stance. Merged hit means Taunt scales off ordinary gear. Gear- and Rage-hungry, no self-heal beyond Victory Rush, and nearly every Protection talent needs a shield. The full Rage formula is unpublished.
Protection Paladin The tank Blizzard named outright: “And yes, you can tank as a Paladin.” Consecration baseline at 20, Seal of Fury as the tank seal, Judgement taunts at 10 yards (other taunts reach 5), Templar's Bulwark absorbs 100% of maximum health, and Swift Judgement buys a second taunt attempt. No interrupt and no slow, kept on purpose. Consecration hits only the first four targets, so no room-pulls.
Bear Druid Primal Bite (renamed from Mangle) fixes Bear's old threat problem: its threat was roughly doubled on 1 October. One Feral tree covers both forms, with a 16-point talent for each. No shield, no block, no plate: mitigation is armor and health. Threat is thin until Primal Bite at level 25.

Our pick: Warrior for the long run, Paladin to start

Paladin is the easiest start: Consecration makes it a working tank from 20, while Bear's Primal Bite and Warrior's Vanguard arrive at 25. Warrior is the long-term pick: Protection was rebuilt as a real tank spec, and in a slow, crowd-control-led game with no dungeon finder (meeting stones list groups but do not summon), a tank never waits for a group. Blizzard's own verdict on Paladins, 15 October: “highly effective tanks”.

Damage — which one Source tier D — our analysis: D

The safe picks

Fury Warrior and Fire Mage. Bloodthirst is back at 45% of Attack Power (1 October) and Whirlwind hits with both weapons baseline. Fire gains Heating Up and Master of Elements, Ignite is now per-Mage, and on 15 October Critical Mass went to 5 ranks and Fire Power started rewarding several Fire effects on one target. Both were top of the vanilla pile, and nothing announced dislodges them.

The new picks

Warlock is the most rebuilt class in the game: Banes, Wrack, Incinerate, Bane of Havoc and a Spirit-scaling Life Tap. Marksmanship Hunter gets Lone Wolf, +20% damage with no pet, which has no vanilla precedent. Assassination Rogue becomes a real spec with Mutilate and Venom.

For every damage dealer, threat and crowd control are design pillars: respect threat, use area damage only when it is safe Source tier A — official Blizzard or live client data: A. Hit and crit are merged across melee, ranged and spells, which Blizzard justified by naming Retribution Paladin and Enhancement Shaman: hybrids no longer split their stats Source tier A — official Blizzard or live client data: A.

Healers — which one Source tier D — our analysis: D

Bonus healing now carries a third as much bonus damage, so a healing spec can quest Source tier A — official Blizzard or live client data: A.

HealerVerdict
PriestStill the default, and a clear Forever winner: Penance, Prayer of Mending and Binding Heal, with Divine Spirit, Fear Ward and Devouring Plague now baseline. No meaningful downside.
Holy PaladinThe biggest healer rework: Light's Vigil lets Holy Shock heal a whole party and reset its own cooldown. Blizzard calls Paladins “the strongest single-target healers in the game”.
Restoration DruidWild Growth and a Swiftmend that no longer consumes your HoT; HoTs can crit; Gift of the Earthmother cuts the global cooldown on the core spells.
Restoration ShamanWater Shield (11 points), Mana Tide Totem (16) and Riptide (31) — and Dwarf Shaman gives the Alliance Chain Heal for the first time.

The traditional trio — Warrior, Mage, Priest

It still lands: each remains a default-correct pick at tank, ranged damage and healer. One caveat each. Warrior carries the largest unknowns (the full Rage formula, world buffs). Mage's Winter's Chill now helps only the casting Mage and, since 15 October, adds no crit — it powers your next Cone of Cold — so a raid can no longer lean on one Frost Mage's debuff. Priest has no downside we can find. Anything else is choosing novelty, and the novelty lives in Warlock and Paladin.

The nine classes

The “Suits” lines and race picks (Alliance / Horde) are ours Source tier D — our analysis: D; each guide's Races section gives the reasoning.

Warrior

Tank · Melee DPS

Changed: Protection rebuilt around the shield; Fury's Bloodthirst back at 45% AP and Whirlwind with both weapons; Victory Rush at 20; Battle Shout raid-wide.

Suits: someone who wants to tank at 60 and accepts the slowest, most gear- and gold-hungry climb. Dual Specialization at 40 makes Fury plus Protection the obvious pair.

Solo 9th · Human / Orc; tank: Dwarf / Tauren · Guide · Talents

Paladin

Tank · Healer · Melee DPS

Changed: one of the two most rebuilt classes: Holy Strike at 6, Consecration baseline at 20, Seal of Fury, a tank seal whose Judgement taunts, Judgement no longer consumes the Seal, Lay on Hands on 20 minutes. Still no interrupt and no slow, on purpose.

Suits: a player who wants all three roles and rarely dies. Undead Paladin is new.

Solo 5th · Human / Undead (Horde's only Paladin) · Guide · Talents

Hunter

Ranged DPS

Changed: Lone Wolf gives Marksmanship +20% damage with no pet; Survival gains melee tools; Summon Hawk and Sniper Shot are new; Aimed Shot baseline at 20, traps in combat, a Fox pet family. Since 15 October Auto Shot needs 0.5s standing still.

Suits: the fastest, safest solo climb, and half of the fastest pair. Human Hunter is new.

Solo 1st · Human / Orc · Guide · Talents

Rogue

Melee DPS

Changed: Mutilate and Venom make Assassination real; Hack and Slash condenses the weapon specialisations; one-handed axes are allowed and poisons stack with weapon stones.

Suits: fast kills and Stealth that skips content, for a player who wants Classic Rogue mostly intact. No heal.

Solo 6th · Human / Orc · Guide · Talents

Priest

Healer · Ranged DPS

Changed: a clear winner: Penance, Prayer of Mending and Binding Heal; Fear Ward and Devouring Plague baseline for every race at 20, Divine Spirit at 30, Shadow Word: Death at 32. Every race keeps two Priest race spells.

Suits: the healer every group wants, if you accept a slow solo climb; wands no longer scale with spell damage. Gnome Priest is new.

Solo 8th · Human / Undead · Guide · Talents

Shaman

Healer · Melee/Ranged DPS

Changed: Lava Burst, Riptide, Water Shield and Rage of the Farseer; on 15 October four totems became raid-wide and Elemental was rebuilt. Totems last 5 minutes.

Suits: a hybrid healer or damage dealer who brings the raid's totems. Dwarf Shaman is new: the Alliance's first Chain Heal.

Solo 7th · Dwarf (Alliance's only Shaman) / Skyborne · Guide · Talents

Mage

Ranged DPS

Changed: Ice Lance at 11 points and Fingers of Frost reshape Frost; Arcane was rebuilt on 15 October; Fire gains Heating Up. Frost Blast at 24, Frostfire Bolt at 40, and Comprehension, a Mage-only minor tradeskill. Winter's Chill helps only the casting Mage.

Suits: quick, safe soloing with free food and water, AoE grinding, and Polymorph where crowd control matters. Orc Mage is new.

Solo 3rd · Skyborne / Troll · Guide · Talents

Warlock

Ranged DPS

Changed: the most rebuilt class: Curse of Agony and Curse of Doom are Banes (one per Warlock per target), Curse of Shadows is gone, Life Tap scales with Spirit, Firestone and Spellstone are weapon imbues; the capstones are Wrack, Demonic Pact and Incinerate.

Suits: a player who wants something genuinely new, with a near-zero-downtime solo loop. Troll Warlock is new.

Solo 2nd · Human / Troll · Guide · Talents

Druid

Tank · Healer · Melee/Ranged DPS

Changed: Primal Bite (was Mangle) fixes Bear threat; Shifting Power replaced Tiger's Fury; Berserk, Wild Growth, and a Swiftmend that keeps your HoT. Revive at 12; forms keep potions and racials. Moonkin Aura and Leader of the Pack are both raid-wide.

Suits: someone who wants every role on one character — the most flexible class.

Solo 4th · Skyborne / Skyborne; Bear: Tauren · Guide · Talents

Who can play what Source tier A — official Blizzard or live client data: A

Six new combos, Blizzard verbatim: “Gnome Priest, Human Hunter, Dwarf Shaman, Orc Mage, Troll Warlock, and Undead Paladin, with more planned for future updates” — two more in Spring 2027 Source tier B — verbatim reporting or hands-on testing: B. Warrior is the only class every race can play; Night Elf and Tauren gained nothing.

Skyborne needs the Heroic Pack ($29.99) or higher and starts on Zephras Isle, apart from a partner for about 12 levels.

Racials Source tier A — official Blizzard or live client data: A

Every race has two active and two passive racials, and resistance racials are gone. The 15 October build changed the ones that decide most picks: the weapon passives became weapon-free crit (Human Ruthless +2% crit, Orc Savage +1%, Dwarf Earth Fury +2% critical damage and healing), Skyborne Wind Blessed rose to +3% haste, Orc Blood Fury went to a 3-minute cooldown, Tauren Endurance traded its +1% hit for +2% critical damage and healing, and Troll Regeneration rose to 20% while Berserking was left alone.

Every racial with its values and open questions is on Races. Our best race for each class, with the reasoning: Warrior · Paladin · Hunter · Rogue · Priest · Shaman · Mage · Warlock · Druid.

Talent structure Source tier A — official Blizzard or live client data: A

  • Three trees per class, seven rows each. 51 talent points at 60 Source tier B — verbatim reporting or hands-on testing: B: points = level − 9.
  • Gold-medal one-point talents at 11, 21 and 31, plus a new one at 16 in every tree: row 4, bought at level 25. A 21 needs level 30 with every point in one tree.
  • Respec at a class trainer in a major city; Dual Specialization at level 40 for every class. A beta respec cost 1 silver; launch pricing is unstated.
  • Talents that only improved a group buff are baseline now: Improved Battle Shout, Divine Spirit, Blessing of Kings, Improved Mark of the Wild, Improved Blessing of Wisdom, Lasting Judgement.
  • Raid-wide since 15 October: Battle Shout, Trueshot Aura, Leader of the Pack, Moonkin Aura and four Shaman totems (Grace of Air, Strength of Earth, Windfury, Flametongue; the last two stay mutually exclusive). Priest, Mage and Druid buffs are not named and were party-only as of 5 October Source tier B — verbatim reporting or hands-on testing: B. Whether Moonkin Aura and Leader of the Pack still exclude each other is untested.
  • Wands and Hunter Auto Shot need you to stand still for 0.5s before they fire (15 October). Spell ranks 1–5 were rebalanced so each new rank is an upgrade; ranks far below your level lose bonus damage and proc chance.
  • The BlizzCon talent window showed a locked “Secondary” tab that Blizzard has never explained Source tier C — provisional or placeholder data: C.
Which numbers to trust

Wowhead marks Forever tooltip values as placeholders. A value Blizzard states is tier A (a later dev note beats an earlier deep dive); the rest are the datamined calculator's (tier B). All of it is the 15 October build; a later build probably went unwalked. Every tree, drawn: Talent Calculator.

Milestone talents: 11, 16, 21, 31 Source tier A — official Blizzard or live client data: A Source tier B — verbatim reporting or hands-on testing: B

Every tree keeps its one-point gold-medal talents at 11, 21 and 31 points, and Forever adds a fourth at 16 in all 27 trees. Names are read from the beta client (15 October build); Blizzard named most of the 16s (tier A), the rest are the datamined layout (tier B). Bold marks a talent new or reworked in Forever. Effects, and the earliest level for each, are in the milestone tables of the class guides.

Feral is the one tree with two 16s: Primal Bite for Bear, Shifting Power for Cat. On 15 October Earthbound replaced Elemental's Call of Thunder and Arcane Wrath replaced Missile Barrage, now a row-1 talent. Corrected 19 September: Combat's 16 is Flawless Execution, not Restless Blades, and Affliction's 31 is Wrack, not Drain Hope.

Picks and rankings are our analysis (tier D) of confirmed mechanics; class values from Blizzard's class deep dives (30 September; 7 and 15 October) and beta development notes (24 September; 1, 8 and 15 October) where stated, otherwise the datamined calculator (tier B), unverified in a live client. The beta's level cap was 30 from 1 October until the beta closed (scheduled 23 October). Last updated 23 October 2026.
